New topics, innovation prizes as SPIE Photonics Europe returns to Strasbourg

Digital optics, quantum technologies, 3D printed optics, unconventional optical imaging among new conferences

SPIE Photonics Europe will return to Strasbourg in April 2018.

CARDIFF, UK, and BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA — Presentation proposals in digital optics, quantum technologies, optical imaging and sensing, laser-based manufacturing, attosecond science, and other photonics technologies are being accepted through 23 October for SPIE Photonics Europe 2018. Sponsored by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, the biennial congress will be held 22-26 April in the renovated and expanded Strasbourg Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Several new conferences have been added to the technical programme, and a new AR/VR Design Challenge offering cash prizes for students is being organized. Returning conferences will cover biophotonics, nanosciences, silicon photonics, and other topics. Complete information is at www.spie.org/PE.

Other highlights include the eighth iteration of the Photonics Innovation Village, high-level plenary speakers, a two-day exhibition connecting research and industry, and a three-segment industry programme focusing on laser processing, imaging, and funding opportunities.

SPIE Photonics Europe will again provide a forum for information updates on the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. Other special sessions are being organized on the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR), and for early-stage researchers and women scientists.

New conferences will cover:

  • Condensed-Phase Physics, chaired by Martin Schultze and Eleftherios Goulielmakis, Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik; and Thomas Brabec, University of Ottawa
  • Digital Optics for Immersive Displays (DOIDs), chaired by Bernard Kress, Microsoft Corp.; Wolfgang Osten, Institut für Technische Optik; and Hagen Stolle, SeeReal Technologies GmbH
  • Fibre Lasers and Glass Photonics, chaired by Stefano Taccheo, Swansea University; Jacob Mackenzie, University of Southampton; and Maurizio Ferrari, CNR - Istituto di Fotonica e Nanotecnologie
  • Organic Electronics and Photonics, chaired by Sebastian Reineke and Koen Vandewal, TU Dresden

In the AR/VR Optical Design Challenge, organized within the DOIDs conference, students will gain recognition and exposure before leaders of some of the industry's top companies, by sharing their design creativity and making a 3–5 minute pitch. Applications are due 1 December. Winners in each category will receive a share of €50,000 in cash and other prizes and support provided by donations from Gold Sponsors Oculus, Google, Zemax, LightTrans, and Microsoft; Silver Sponsors Leia Inc., Zeiss, Amazon, and Synopsys; and Equipment/Software Sponsors Lambda, Zemax, and Nvidia.

A returning competition, the Photonics Innovation Village will provide researchers with an opportunity to share their latest findings with industry innovators and other photonics visionaries. The winner will receive €1500, and the first and second runners-up will each receive €500. Applications are due 23 October.
